@greeting(Dear Jim:)

As I mentioned on the phone on Friday, Professor Jacob T. Schwartz
of the Courant Institute of New York University is interested in the
possibility of moving to Stanford along with his wife, Frances Allen,
who works at IBM Yorktown Heights. Hearing his lecture on Friday
on the subject of work at Courant on "ultra-computers", e.g.,
40 billion instructions/second, suggested to me that he might
be appropriately considered for the senior appointment in CIS.
Jack Schwartz is well known for his work in mathematics
(functional analysis) and computer science. In computer science
he has developed the language SETL for computing with sets and
has worked on proving properties of programs. I believe he has
also worked on numerical methods for hydrodynamics and on compiling
techniques, but I'm not sure. Gene Golub has his full biography
and publication list.
However, it is his
recent work on ultra-computers that suggests him for CIS.
In my opinion, he has some of the best ideas in this area.
The talk discussed a proposed system of 10,000 micro-processors
looking at a large memory through a switch. Unlike most workers
in that field, he didn't skimp discussion of the switch. In fact,
he proposed to put more gates in the switch than in the micro-processors.
The particular CIS need I think he will fill best is to
lead the development of ideas appropriate for translation into
VLSI hardware. He mentioned several such ideas.
The Computer Science Department would be the appropriate departmental
home. I think he should be invited out again to meet the
CIS faculty.
